Each year, you make the same excuse when spring and summer roll around: living in an apartment doesn’t provide you with enough space for a garden. While it is true that living in an apartment does limit the outdoor space available to you for a garden, that doesn’t mean you have to live without satisfying your green thumb.

Gardening in an Apartment

  • Choose the Location- As with any type of garden, the location of the garden in your apartment is an essential part of ensuring healthy, beautiful plants. While apartments are generally small, there are locations where a flowers and vegetables can flourish. Take for instance, the balcony or porch. If you are privileged enough to have a porch or balcony, take advantage of it. Decorate it with bright, colourful pots filled with beautiful flowers. Set up shelves where pots can be placed for vertical gardening. Don’t have a balcony? Take advantage of the window sills with the help of our window box planter, an ingenious way to save space while enjoying fresh vegetables, herbs, or flowers.

  • Choose the Right Containers- If you choose to work with containers and pots, make sure to choose the right ones. While there are many that are attractive and eye-catching, they might not be right if they don’t have the proper qualities. Each container needs to be big enough to support the plant roots; the plant won’t grow if its roots are smothered and confined. Each pot should also have adequate drainage holes. Without these holes, water will be unable to drain and you could potentially drown the plants.

  • Choose Herbs- For small spaces, herbs are sometimes the best types of plants to begin growing, especially if you only have enough space for indoor plants. Herbs like dill, thyme, chives, oregano, rosemary, and basil will not only liven up the living space but will make an excellent addition to your summer and fall meals.

  • Choose the Right Veggies- Certain vegetables are easier to grow in containers, window boxes, and hanging baskets. For apartment gardening, consider veggies like carrots, bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, leeks, and Brussels sprouts. If you will be using our window box planter, salad vegetables will grow well.

  • For the Busy Apartment Dweller- Don’t spend a lot of time at home? If you’re worried you might kill whatever type of plant you try to grow in your apartment, consider a no-muss, no-fuss type of plant, like cacti. These plants can be grown in our zinc planters and require very little care. Simply place them in a sunny spot and water them when they become too dry. You can experience all the beauty and fulfilment of gardening this way, without taking up much room in the apartment or requiring much effort on your part.

Love the idea of gardening, but think you can’t have one of your own, simply because you live in an apartment? You can. Just find the right location, use the right containers, and choose the best type of vegetable, herb, or no-fuss plant to suit you.
